Artist Aleksandra Zee’s $2,100 Apartment Tour In VR 360 | Sweet Digs VR 360 | Refinery29

Posted on November 27, 2019

Hi guys, I’m Aleksandra Zee and welcome to my Sweet Digs. Before we get started, go ahead and click the subscribe button at the bottom of the page to follow along with Refinery29. And if you have these cool things and want to watch it in VR, click on the VR icon in the playbar. Alright, come on in! This is a one bedroom apartment and it is $2100 a month. I live here with my fiancé. I am really lucky to live in Oakland and be surrounded by so many incredible makers, and being a woodworker myself, my house is filled with things that I have made and especially things that my good friends have made. One of my favorite makers is featured. Her name is Katie Gong, and if you look over underneath the hats, she made that beautiful wooden knot. We have a ton of hats. In this apartment we kind of decorate with them, and anywhere I go I buy a hat so that’s kind of something that I hoard. My favorite thing in this room is our gigantic king size bed that takes up the entire room, and my little baby Jack who is in his tiny bed is usually in the big bed with us. The next thing I’d like to show you, which is right across the hall, is the bathroom. And that is definitely not my favorite space. C’mon, let’s go. It is itty bitty. When me and my fiancé are in here we definitely bump booties. One good thing about the bathroom is there is a tub behind this door that is definitely key. There’s also this very funky window. So the window lets in no light but lets in air, which is good. Hello! Also, I can hear everybody else’s bathrooms. Kinda gross. Anyways, let’s get out of here. I make it a point to surround myself with an incredible community of makers and I also bring that into my space. So take a second to look around and you can see what I’ve made or what I’ve purchased and who’s made it. Almost everything in here is handmade, and if it’s not handmade then it was bought with intention. I try to keep things in my house that I use and not too many things that don’t serve a purpose. And the things that don’t serve a purpose are pretty special. Other things in the apartment that are kind of eye grabbing is this giant mirror over here that I made, and it’s made out of walnut. I was on the hunt for a floor mirror that had a live edge wood frame and I couldn’t find it anywhere. And so I decided to make it. It was definitely a learning lesson, I messed up a couple times but I love how it came out and it’s really fun to have in the house. It kind of makes it feel bigger. Just like the bedroom, I put it kind of reflecting a window so that it opens up the space. There are so many windows and so I can have all these plants. All my plants are so happy. The sun does fill the apartment at different times of the day and I can just feel all my plants smiling and growing. It’s my favorite place to hang out, but I want to show you my kitchen now. It’s a little bit unconventional and kind of tiny but come see what I did with it. We don’t really do that much cooking. Antrom cooks a mean breakfast and I like to make cheese plates because to me that’s about having good friends over for good conversation and laughs. And I really love filling my space with the energy of all the people that I love. And I’ve also got it on one of my cutting boards that I made. Something that I do love about the kitchen is this triangle shelf. When I moved in here there was a lack of storage, and I’ve got a lot of collections of bowls and ceramics and cookbooks. The funny thing is, I don’t know how to
cook. If you have any easy recipes or things I should maybe learn how to make, please leave it in the comments below. I would love to read. Because my studio is right down the street, and I can’t really woodwork in the house ‘cause sawdust get everywhere, we wanted to have a creative space for at least one of us. It’s just a really inspiring little spot and I feel like we’re using the kitchen very differently because we do have our dining area in the living room. Antrom has his music corner over here but I’ve got a little secret corner of my own. This is my closet. So not only do I get to store all of my clothes and everything is really organized, but I have space to store workout equipment. I can pull it out, workout, take my me time and then put it back away. I need to have that little bit of time that just revolves around me, my mental space and pushing my body. I hope you felt inspired while hanging out with me in my place. I’m gonna show you the door. C’mon let’s go! Thank you so much for coming in and taking a tour of my Sweet Digs. I’ll see you later, bye!

The way everone feels about VR is the way I JUST stopped feeling about YouTube! So I'm REALLY lost! Currently laying on my desk trying to figure out if there is a spider on the living room ceiling, and also why I care if there isπŸ˜‚
Update: I think it's a plant hook-whew Aleksandra, I think you will be alright! I love when spaces reflect people, you learn so much from them! Thanks for sharing. I would love to possess the skill set to create kitchen cabinets that look like a french provincial dresser with curves and legs! And a hutch upper!
And, you can "fry" any veggie in the air fryer-my fav is radishes and carrots! No ingredients except the vegies neededπŸ‘ŠπŸ’¨ Add the vegies to a box of stock, and now you have soup!

If your entire audience is telling you they dislike VR and your like to dislike ratio is atrocious why continue with this trend. If you’ve already filmed a bunch of VR videos and don’t want the time/money to go to waste go back and film a one take house tour with a regular camera so we have an option. So disappointing

+Refinery 29 – Overall, I'm impartial to Sweet Digs Virtual Reality 360 videos. They're okay. Not completely horrible. With each 360 VR video, I can see and grasp each person's space. Also, viewers can see more things not typically shown. The virtual reality experience will be different for each user. Quality of experience will be determined by a number of factors: age and type of electronic device used (e.g. older computers or smartphones will have trouble), Internet connection speed, access to a virtual reality headset, and any possible health / visual conditions. These are just factors that Refinery29 can't control. I can't be upset with Refinery29 wanting to try virtual reality videos. It's an up-and-coming technology one is going to see more of in the upcoming years.

Overall, Aleksandra and Antrom have a beautifully designed apartment. Their friends, along with themselves, are great artists. And, I loved all the plants and sunlight! However, I am upset and annoyed with the building owner of Aleksandra's complex. The owner of this building needs to renovate the units–at bare minimum the kitchen and bathroom areas. There's many ways to renovate this apartment complex while still keeping the Spanish 1920's – 1940's architectural design of the apartment complex intact. Across the country, their are so many examples of updated homes with the older charm still present.

I don't get all the hate. It's quite useful to really be in the space, you get far more information with this than canned videos. I guess most of the subs don't have any VR capability and just watch it on their monitor hence their reaction. If you don't have a decent VR device you should give it a shot, it is quite impressive.

Cook a steak if you aren't vegan….look up Gordon Ramsey on Youtube on how to cook a steak. I thought I didn't like steak, but I was wrong….my mom just isn't a good cook growing up I only ate the fat. Now that I'm older I can't believe I only ate the fat but there was no flavor whatsoever. I promise if you watch his video and follow it step by step you will have a perfect steak. I was do damn proud of myself to have such perfection on my first try. Also can't just throw the meat in the pan cold, has to be room temperature and make sure to season it nice…….salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic salt and powder and rosemary, mmmmm!!!!

I don't like the set up of the building (not her stuff) but the flow of it….I should be an architecture so people can have their space and functionality lol…..this one felt very claustrophobic to me but I also missed a lot of the space bc I don't have VR so whatever they were showing I couldn't see.

Pay no mind to the naysayers, as you already said that you will keep this series in dual format, for those that may prefer more traditional methods until they get the hang of it.
For those that are discarding this work, please try and wear a vr headset if available… you’ll find how enriching this immersive experience can be!

I think this 360 video is great! I feel YouTube needs to do a better job interms of buffering and quality. It played back at 1080 60fps for me. Ideally it should be viewed at 8K res but I blame YouTube for not doing a better job with playback
